Nigeria may miss World Athletics Championships

Nigeria athletes may not participate in the London 20117 World Athletics Championships, unless the Ministry of Youth and Sports moves fast to register Nigeria for the event, which registration closed Sunday midnight.

As at the time of filling this report, it was not clear whether the AFN has registered for the championship or not, as all efforts by The AUTHORITY to confirm the situation proved abortive as there was no response to all inquiries made to the officials of the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

Executive board members of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) have regretted the inability of the Federal ministry of Youth and Sports to help the federation organize the final trials ahead of the World Athletics Championships in London

A board member-elect of the AFN, Sunday Adeleye blamed the rather ugly development on the inability of the Ministry of Youth and Sports to financially support the championship.

Adeleye, who is the athletes’ representative on the board told journalists, that only three people pulled resources together to ensure that the chance of giving the athletes the opportunity to showcase their talents was not lost.

“As I speak to you, we have not gotten a dime from the Ministry of Youth and Sports to organize this championship. They claim there is no money for it and that our board has not been inaugurated. But it is this same championship that will qualify our athletes to participate in the world championship.

“As we speak, nobody has talked about how to register for the world championship which must be done before midnight on Sunday. We have to pay for flight tickets as well as pay allowances to the athletes.”
