Ohanaeze Ndigbo and Support for Good Governance

MAURICE OKAFOR in Enugu reports that the leadership of the apex body of all Igbo socio cultural organizations, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, saddled with the responsibility of promoting Igbo unity, cultural values and norms, says it has also imposed the task of championing and supporting good governance in the country, as measure for gingering the welfare of the people and the rest of the country.

The President of the organization in Enugu state, Chief Alex Ogbonnia, made the clarification at the event of inaugurating the officials of Enugu South Local Government chapter of Ohaneze, held at the council’s headquarter over the weekend.

Chief Alex Ogbonnia stressed that if the leadership of Ohanaeze continues to keep quiet over social maladies in the country, because it is not a political party, the negative after effects will affect the generation of Igbos yet to be born.

To avoid the such doom, the organization he said has woken up to the clarion call of supporting good governance where and when it appears to manifest and also have it as a task to criticize bad governance, where applicable.

Ogbonnia said the present agitation for an independent state of Biafra by MASSOB,IPOB, and other pro Buafra activists resulted from the structural imbalance of the country which is high against Ndigbo. He said the leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo is advocating for fiscal federalism and restructuring of the country.

He advised all Igbo sons and daughters of voting age, to use the opportunity of the ongoing registration exercise to acquire voters card to enthrone good leaders at the poll.

Chief Ogbonnia further asked Ndigbo to embrace Agriculture in all ramifications even as he advised every Igbo man to plant at least a garden within his or her immediate environment and to start rearing cattle once again.

Chief Elijah Ogbe, who was elected as the leader of Ohanaeze Ndigbo for Enugu South local government assured his administration will thrive hard in rediscovering and endearing lost cultural values among their people as well as enthroning good governance.

Mr Onyekwere Nwodo, a journalist and formerly of the Punch Newspaper was elected as Secretary of Ohaneze Ndigbo in Enugu South local government area, of Enugu state.

The Chairman, Caretaker committee of Enugu South local government, Comrade Sunday Ugwu, promised to work harmoniously with the new executives of Ohanaeze Ndigbo of his council.
