Following the recall of about 2,000 suspended Local Government workers in Imo State, the state chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has commended the decision, saying it was engineered by bad belle.
NLC Chairman for Imo State, Comrade Austin Chilakpu said contrary to the belief that the affected workers shunned work, they were health workers whose point of duties were Primary Health Centres and were not expected to sign attendance register at the council headquarters.
Speaking to newsmen in Owerri at the weekend, Chilakpu said the suspended council workers, drawn from the 27 Local Government Areas of Imo State, were tagged “ghost workers” and suspended for allegedly not attending to their duties by the Imo State Local Government Service Commission.
He disclosed that a probe team set up by Imo NLC discovered that the alleged suspended workers were health workers who did not enjoy support from their superiors, saying their salaries were stopped since January 2017.
Chilakpu said, “after the Governor saw that Ahiajoku Centre Owerri was filled to the brim with these living souls branded ghost workers on June 16 and moved by the right spirit of God that he (Governor Okorocha) decided to rescind the suspension order”.
