The Transition Committee Chairman of Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State, Rt Hon Chukwudi Orizu has warned mischief makers peddling rumours of imported guns into Nnewi not to kick-start an ethnic war with the name of the commercial town.
Hon Orizu, in a phone chat yesterday, described the trending rumours and falsehood of arms smuggled in by Boko Haram terrorists into Nnewi which have made the net agog and on fire on the falsehood and rumour of Boko Haram terrorists stealthily smuggling arms into Nnewi as very unfortunate.
The council boss noted that the unfounded rumour is capable of igniting ethnic clash because of the strategic importance of Nnewi as the home of the natural leader of Ndigbo, Chief Chukwuemeka Ojukwu.
“Many people may wrongly believe the rumour and start attacking the Hausa people in other places in the South East with the possibilities of repercussion in the north, that is why it is important for our people to know that such never happened here,” he explained.
Meanwhile, the Commander of Nnewi Area Command of Nigeria Police Force, Mr Ikechukwu Odokoro (ACP) speaking on behalf of other security agencies in the area said the rumour is unfounded and that a combined security team are fully on the ground to cater for security needs of the people.
