The Bayelsa state Police Command yesterday said it arrested two suspects, a serving soldier and an engineer for allegedly kidnapping a lady in Warri, Delta state on April 4, 2017.
Speaking in Yenagoa after parading the suspects before journalists, the Bayelsa state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Asuquo Amba, said the suspects abducted 25-year-old Aya Beauty, in Warri, and took her to Bayelsa state where the victim was kept captive in a hotel room. According to the police commissioner, the suspected kidnappers demanded a ransom of N24 million from the family of the victim, explaining that they later reduced the money to N11 million, and further reduced the money to N200, 000.
He said that before the suspects were arrested by the police, the fiancée of the victim had paid the N200, 000 to the suspected kidnappers. The police boss said the command also arrested an ex- soldier armed with a military pistol along Zarama road in the East-West road during a stop -and -search operation.
Amba said the three suspects would be charged to court as soon as ongoing investigations to their crimes were concluded. He further said the command has benefitted from the community involvement in crime fighting through active participation of the neighborhood watch and vigilante groups.
He said the command has resolved to work closely with the traditional institution, security stakeholder’s civil society organizations and all relevant agencies to make the state crime free. The police boss advised sister security agencies to ensure that dismissed officers were profiled and stripped of ammunitions to check the menace of criminally minded ex-servicemen who use illicit weapons to terrorize the society.
