About 120 athletes are expected to take part in the maiden edition of the Armed Forces and Security Agencies Half Marathon Championship scheduled for April 29th, in Abuja.
This comprises 20 veterans and 100 regulars drawn from the Armed Forces and other Security Agencies.
The Chairman Organizing Committee, Maj Gen Sardauna Davies, stated this in a pre-championship press conference held on Wednesday in Abuja.
Gen Davies said that the Objective is to foster existing relationship amongst security services in the country.
He said: “In order to make it of international standard, we enlisted the support of the Athletic Fededratin of Nigeria (AFN).
“We asked that we get some internatinal athletes from AFN to run along side the competitors, but we were told that all the internatinal athletes are virtually drawn from the Armed Forces and security agencies.”
The CDS, he said view sports as one of the veritable instruments of cementing relations amongst security agencies in the country.
Saying that they took their time to ensure that the championship meets the requirements of AFN and and international Athletic Federation.
He enjoined members of the public not to worry as the routes were marked out by the AFN in consultation with FRSC who would ensure hitch free traffic on that day.
The participants are drawn from the Army, Navy, Air Force, NSCDC, Immigration, Fire Service, FRSC, Police,Prisons Service and Customs Service.
The 21 Kilometer Marathon race is expected to commence from Abuja National Stadium through Berger Bridge, Mabushi Bridge to Tipper Garage through Mambila Barracks through AYA to Mogadishu Cantonment Parade Ground, which is the finishing point.
The Championship is Co-sponsored by NTA, Zenith Bank, 7Up, Pepsi, Mirinda, Morning Dew, Commins West Africa and Prixair among others.
