The Imo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has insisted that its candidate for Imo North district rerun poll, Senator Athan Achonu, would only participate in the election if fresh ballot papers and sheets were provided by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The initial election was postponed on grounds of disturbance and improper conduct of some opposition party supporters who protested at the INEC office on the eve of the poll.
Briefing journalists yesterday, the state chairman of the party, Nnamdi Ayanehie, alleged that the discovery of a different ballot paper for the fresh exercise prompted the protest by youth of the rival All Progressives Congress (APC).
The state party chairman, however warned that “any attempt by INEC to use the former ballot paper would mean that there will no be election in the state”.
Claiming that INEC suspended the rerun election out of intimidation by APC, he also noted that Governor Rochas Okorocha violated the electoral act by campaigning in his state wide broadcast 24 hours to the election.
Achonu himself described the suspension of the election by INEC on grounds of security as laughable, expressing worries that the security in the state is not conducive for the conduct of the election.
